Take Control of Your WhatsApp Digital Footprint
While instant messaging connects us with the world, it can sometimes feel incredibly intrusive. If you want to use WhatsApp on your own terms without feeling pressured to reply instantly, configuring your built-in privacy settings is essential. Here is a step-by-step guide to locking down your WhatsApp account.
1. Hiding Your Last Seen and Online Status
By default, anyone can see when you were last active. To change this:
- Navigate to Settings > Privacy.
- Tap on Last Seen & Online.
- Select Nobody under "Who can see my last seen".
- Under "Who can see when I'm online", select Same as Last Seen.
Note: If you hide your own Last Seen, you won't be able to see other people's Last Seen either.
2. Disabling Read Receipts (Blue Ticks)
To read messages without letting the sender know you've opened them, toggle off Read Receipts in the Privacy menu. Keep in mind that this also disables blue ticks for you when sending messages, and read receipts are always active inside group chats.
3. Limiting Profile Photo and About Visibility
To prevent strangers or stalkers from saving your profile picture, change the visibility of your Profile Photo and About status to My Contacts. This simple adjustment ensures only trusted contacts in your address book can see your personal images.
